READING WORKSHOP BASED ON THE
READING “CONVERSATION ANALYSIS” LIDDICOAT A. J, (2007)
11. What
are some of the key issues at the time of stablishing the distinction between conversation
and conversation analysis?
Conversation is used as a tool by human beings to interact
with others, is a progression of exchanges, not only in terms of linguistic
codes but also taking into account some paralinguistic signs present in conversation.
Conversation analysis goes beyond; it studies what happens in social
interaction and talk as a way to understand human beings in different
contexts.it sees turn by turn how interaction is constructed and reconstructed
by participants.
22. How
can you explain the principle of orderliness as something manifested both in
social life and in interaction?
Orderliness is manifested both, in social life
and interaction, participants achieve it while turn taking talk, so it is not
only a matter of conversation itself as a communication tool, but also, about
hoe human beings are socially organized.
33. A
recurrent issue addressed in ethnomethodology and CA, in particular, is the
notion of social action. How can you explain this notion and its importance in
the study of talk and interaction?
Human beings are daily involved in social
actions, being those understood as an individual or group behavior that
involves interaction. Therefore, to study talk it is because must be a social
action that involves speaking and interaction among people.
44. A
fundamental idea in CA was introduced by Sacks, Schegloff and Jeferson (1974)
as recipient design. Can you briefly explain this notion and its importance in
the study of talk in interaction? Recipient
design is a salient feature of talk and the organization of talk and it is
important because through this, participants design their talk to be understood
in terms of the knowledge participant assume they share and it is also a resource
listeners can use in interpreting talk. In other words, it allow participants
to achieve order in a conversation and order in social interaction.
55. Some
other key notions in the study of talk in interaction are addressed from the
perspective of mundane and institutional talk. Did you get a clear distinction?
Mundane refers to informal talk in every social setting, it is not enclosed to
any specific contexts or to accomplishments of pre- stablished tasks. On the other
hand, institutional talk is institutionally embedded and restricted to the
achievement of predefined goals. Institutions are mostly related to building like
schools, hospitals, courts. Etc.
66. Context
is certainly an important issue in the study of talk in interaction. Heritage
(1984b) explored the role of context in understanding the social function of
talk. He then identified two of them named context-shaped and context renewing.
Can you provide some basic explanation about them?
Context shaped is where what
the participant say is shaped by the context in which it is created. Moreover,
in context renewing, each turn and talk is the response to some previous talk. Context
is dynamic, is renewing at each point in the talk.
77. How
can you explain this statement “conversation analysis is analysis of real
world, situated contextualized talk”?
To develop conversation analysis analysts
must have some data; besides data have to be actual talk, only natural
instances of talk can provide analysts to examine what speakers actually do
when speaking.
88. Some
other fundamental issues with regard to CA states that conversation analysis
tends to proceed using unmotivated looking. Can you provide some understandings
for the comprehension of the statement?
It means taking data and listen to it repeatedly
in order to see what is going on in it, rather than searching for a particular
patter, in simple words, listen over and
over again and lets data talks.
